Offshore Days from Mi Amigo

In 2021, Radio Mi Amigo mounted a week long event live on the seawall promenade in Zeebrugge. Using a traditional style mobile studio, the daytime hours were hosted by the station's key Flemish DJs.  In the evening, programmes came live from London and from Cornwall in England, courtesy of Paul Newman and Steve Foster.

The mobile studio or presentation trailer has been provided by Event Trailer Services and was an original 'old school' radio studio, complete with cart machiens for jingles. It also has a pair of turntables, so the original vinyl 45s could be played, making the station sound more authentic - just like the 1970s Radio Mi Amigo. The studio will be used for future events by the station, such as a new Radio Mi Amigo Drive In Show to be launched later in 2021.

The Offshore Days event is also being heard all over the Netherlands on a DAB slot as well as online and on the SW transmitter on 6085 from Germany.  The DAB channel can be found on the MTVNL multiplexes, where the BBC World Service feed is found.

One cold Sunday in February 2019, the Radio Mi Amigo 40 team lifted the anchor for their 2019 project  "MI AMIGO 45".

Five years after their success with Mi Amigo 40 in Ostend the Mi Amigo team set their sails for the beautiful Belgian seaside resort of  Blankenberge, to organise a week of transmissions,  "live from the ship CASTOR".  This will happen from Thursday 30 May to Sunday 2 June during the Blankenberg Havenfeesten "MI AMIGO 45".
Over the last 45 years, a lot of DJs and employees of Radio Mi Amigo have passed on.  One of the biggest losses though is the leader of the Radio Mi Amigo team, Sylvain Tack.

Among the well-known Radio Mi AMigo DJs who have passed on are Joop Verhoof, Dick Verheul, Stan Haag, Peter van Dam, Haike Debois, Mike Moorkens, Herman de Graaff, Hans van der Ven, Danny Vuylsteke, Eric Mes (272), and Mareille of the Mi Amigo Fanclub.

They played a huge part in bringing Radio Mi Amigo to the listeners in the UK, France and the Benelux countries.
Radio Mi Amigo launched its programmes on New Years Day, 1974, broadcasting  from the Radio Caroline ship the Mi Amigo, from where the station took its name.  It continued until 1978, when the crew left the Mi Amigo for their own vessel, the MV Magdalena, anchored closer to Belgium.

The new Radio Mi Amigo ship had been fitted out in Greece by tender operator Patrick Vallain, although it took them a long time to get it operational. Radio Mi Amigo transmissions were made using a 10kW transmitter on 272m, but after only a few months the ship lost her anchor and was arrested by the Dutch in September 1979.

Radio Caroline continued with Flemish and Dutch programmes for another year but that service closed in March 1980 when the MV Mi Amigo ship foundered in March 1980.

When Radio Caroline returned from a new ship, the Ross Revenge, Dutch programmes commenced once again as Radio Monique (named after Fred Bolland's wife).  Tenders for the new Radio Caroline ship were operated from several Belgian and French ports.

In 1989 another radio ship moored off Zeebrugge; the MV Nannell broadcast for a very short time on FM but returned to the UK shortly afterwards.

Radio Mi Amigo International
Radio Mi Amigo International is a group of (mostly) former offshore radio celebrities operating an international radio station that captures the spirit of the good ship, the Mi Amigo, with an AM sound on SW and online.

The station is widely heard on both the internet and on Short Wave. It uses a pair of powerful SW transmitters in Germany, fully licensed and officially operating, in the 49 and 41 meter bands.

The station is led by Lion Keezer, who was involved with Radio Caroline in the early 1970s. The current line-up includes Lion Keezer from Caroline, Paul Newman, Rosko, Johnny Lewis and several Flemish Radio Mi Amigo DJs including Bruno Hantsen  and Johan Vermeer.

Radio Mi Amigo Memories

Even though Offshore radio has left the North Sea many stations still exist on land and are very popular.  There are two other organisations using the Radio Mi Amigo banner - one is Radio Mi Amigo International, a short wave station broadcasting on high power SW from Germany, and the other is a group of fans who broadcast in Harwich from the LV18 (an old lighthship) for a week every Summer.

Belgium and Offshore Radio

While Belgium had some of the world's first broadcasts (as early as 1910, thanks to the Belgian Royal family being very interested), its broadcasting was government controlled.   In 1962, Radio Antwerpen  began transmission from a ship moored off Ostend, the MV Uilenspiegel.  The owner, George fell ill and a few days later the ship ran aground on the beach at Knokke, on the border with Holland.  It remained entrenched in the sand for the next 15 years.

In Summer 1973, Radio Atlantis began broadcasting to Belgium, initially from the Mi Amigo, then anchored off Scheveningen, and later with its own ship, the MV Jeanine.  It had a Flemish service during the day and  English programmes at night.  Radio Atlantis closed down when the Dutch anti-radio ship law took effect, at the end of August 1974.

In Autumn 2019 the Radio Mi Amigo book was published. It is called 'Mi Amigo, de Vlaamse Tack van de zeezenders’, written and published by Ferry Eden. Most of the offshore radio stations between 1958 and 1991 are discussed and it tracks the hirstory of how Radio Mi Amigo was born at the end of 1973.

The history of this Dutch-speaking offshore station is described comprehensibly. Due to the quasi-legal nature of Radio Mi Amigo and the other offshore radiostations, everything had to be organized secretly, so the book is packed with weird, unexpected and miraculous events.

The book has 200 pages, 504 photos and lots of illustrations and costs € 49 excluding shipping costs.  Because the postage varies by country, the amount you have to pay depends on the shipping address.

After sending the order form you will receive an automatic message* about the further processing. Your transfer is then the proof of payment for the pre-registration, not your registration and order form.

Order Netherlands € 41.95
In other countries in  Europe € 49,45
Order outside Western Europe € 54,95

PAUL NEWMAN
One of the station's brightest stars, Paul has worked at Capital and on Smooth Radio in London and FM stations in Hampshire & Berkshire, plus various temporary “RSL” stations for special events.

Since he got his first radio aged ten, Paul has been a total radio junkie. In 2011, Paul built his own home studio and made shows for Radio Seagull ever since. His long-held ambition to one day broadcast to the world on short wave has now come true, with his 'Radio Shack' show being heard each weekend, far and wide on Radio Mi Amigo International.

Paul also plays soul music on Solar Radio on Saturday evenings.
